We have wonderful news this
month about a new and unique Blessing Home in Thailand!
Special Blessings in Korat
serves children with special needs. Many schools in Thailand are not equipped
to educate children who need frequent assistance with activities of daily
living, such as feeding themselves, walking, or going to the bathroom by themselves.
Special Blessings provides:
care for these children so that the caregivers can go to work,
development-based learning so the children can become more independent and may
qualify for school, education for the children and families about nutrition and
hygiene to keep the child healthy, and scholarships for the siblings of the
special needs child to keep them in school through high school graduation.
When David and I were in
Thailand last fall, we had the honor of visiting this new Blessing Home and
help prepare it for the students. Our group helped with painting the building
and telling the community about the Blessing Home. We did an English camp there
and had crafts and games and bible stories and had so much fun with the kids in
the community!
Carol and Vicki are the
missionaries who are leading this Blessing Home. It was wonderful to see how
they were able to use their professional experience in education and
occupational therapy to serve their community. David and I loved seeing how
each Blessing Home was a little different because they all utilized the strengths of
the missionaries and focused on the needs of the community.
We were able to meet their first
child in the program Kaohawm. This beautiful little girl is deaf and has Down
Syndrome. Since her mother didn’t have access to therapy or education on how to
help Kaohawm grow in her skills, Kaohawm was unable to walk or even roll over
or communicate when Vicki and Carol met her. Through the Special Blessings
Program and the very hard work of Carol and Vicki, Kaohawm can walk, feed
herself, and can communicate through sign language. Because of her independence
in her activities, she is now accepted into a Thai school for the deaf. When we
met Kaohawm she was running and playing with us and we could barely believe that
when she was 2 ½ years old she was unable to even sit up. Now, more children
have come in to the program and we are so excited to see these children grow
into their full potential.
